I am Mrs. Iseman and I am the Student Assistance Counselor here at OHS and OMS. I love to read, both in print and in audio versions.

I heard Gregory Maguire speak at the University at Albany, where he graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor's degree, last Thursday evening, March 13. He read some passages from several of his books, and showed a slide show of some of his earliest attempts at writing and illustrating. He answered some audience questions and autographed his books.

I personally have only read his book, Wicked, which was a little too far out for my taste. When I heard that some of you were reading Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, I ordered the book on CD from my local library, but it has not arrived yet. Hopefully, it will come this week, and then I will be able to re-read your blog posts and understand them!

responce to Joc;

i think that clara has many issues,no offence. she is so cought up with herself that she can't see the beauty of the world around her. Her arrogance made it so that she couldn't enjoy what she had. i think that Iris is happier with her life because she is exposed to more. Iris see's the beauty and color in everything and is more apprechiative to what she had, as apposed to clara who always had everything.

QUESTION FOR ALL:

Why did Van Den Meer actually marry Margarethe? i never unstood that. I understand that his wife had just died but like why did he remarry... especially Margarethe.

Their words must have ripped her apart.

Response to Meridith's question:

I was very surprised when I found out that Ruth was not as stupid as she was portrayed in the actual story. I was rather surprised when I read the epilogue and found out that it was not Iris speaking in the prologue, but Ruth. I think that Ruth was the one to be most pitied in this story, because when people talked about her right in front of her, thinking that she could not understand, their words must have have

Response to Merediths question.

I was not surprised. Just because Ruth acts stupid doesn't mean that she really is.

Id have to say i would sympathize more with iris. It must be hard trying to take care of Ruth, and then having to befriend Clara. Also having to be her sister also. I just think it must be a little difficult for her.

I think the Confessions of an ugly stepsister resembles the Cinderella story more by Charles Perrault. This story has less violence shall i say. Like, everybody stays intact in that story, just like in the Confessions of an ugly stepsister. Also, in both, the mother dies. In most Cinderella stories the mother dies, but still. Another reason is that they sort of have like the same kind of language. The Perrault story isnt completely like the Confessions of an ugly stepsister but they are sort of alike. In both stories there were fairy godmothers. In the Confessions of an ugly stepsister, Clara said her mother was but it was still her fairy godmother. The last reason why I think they are similar is that all of the girls had to do work. Im saying, it wasnt just Clara who had to do the work.

There were also differencesbetween these two stories. In the Cinderella stories, the mother is out of the sotry in different ways. So is the father. The sisters are also explained differently too. Everybody is explained differently.
