Question #5
Which version of Cinderella does Gregory Maguire’s Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister most closely resemble? Give at least 5 details to support your answer.
It was a fun story but it was too serious. It followed the Cinderella story that I have heard all throughout my childhood. It was also a lot more detailed than childhood stories that don’t have all of the gory details. I did not like it as much as the Grimm Brothers story.
I loved the Grimm Brothers story a lot more than the Charles Perrault version. I most likely will remember the part when one stepsister cuts off her toe and the other one cuts off the back of her heal. I remembered that from years ago when my mother read me the story.
I did like the cinderella story by Charles Perrault. The story was good. I liked that it was basically cinderella but like, there were a few differences. The part of the story i liked was how when cinderella was all dressed up and the sisters didnt recognize her, she was still nice to them. Even though she knew who they were, and knew how they treated her, she still treated them ever so kindly.
I liked the Grimm Brothers story! I’ve always liekd the Grimm Brothers, so its cool that I got to read it. I thought it was weird when they started cutting their feet up to get it to fit into the slipper. Like really, who does that?
It was a good story. It was a classic story of cinderella, and didn’t twist it much at all. i liked it better then the Grim Brother’s story i think, only because it wasn’t as gory.
They both had the same cinderella story. When the evil lady meets the father of the pretty girl. they get married and the stepsisters treat the pretty girl like dirt. (literally!!!)
Then the daughter marries the prince and they live happily ever after.
This was basically the classic Cinderella story that was portrayed by Disney, with the kind and caring Cinderella and the evil and ugly stepmother and stepsisters. This story is more sweet, and has a happy ending for all of the characters.
I thought that this was a fun twist to the standard tale of Cinderella. It was kind of wiwerd, but I still liked it. As opposed to the the other CInderella story, it had a happy ending only for CInderella. The stepsisters had mutilated feet and got their eyes pecked out instead of marrying some lords.
The two stories have the same basic layout, with the mother dying, and getting a new, evil stepmother and stepsisters. The prince still marries Cinderella, and she is still ridiculously beautiful and kind. The stsepsisters are still ugly and mean, and Cinderella is still doing nothing but cleaning until she goes to the ball. It gets kind of boring.
Even though the layout between the stories is the same, it is the details that are different. In the Grimm Brothers story, instead of a fairy godmother, she has a dove that is her mother’s spirit. In the Charles Perrault version, Cinderella’s father had looked for her after she had got back from the ball with the prince.
the charles perrault version is more serious therfore harder to tell that it is a fake story even though we all know it is. The grimm brothers version is a lot more fairy tale like therefore less realistic.
I think that Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister more closely relates to the version of Cinderella by Charles Perrault. In this version, there is a fairy godmother, and there is not in Confessions, but I think that this story relates more because the stepsisters are not quite as mean. Also, Margarethe made Clara do all of the housework along with Ruth, and showed her true colors after the wedding, in a way. This is also similar to the Charrles Perrault version. Another similarity is that Margarethe wanted her two daughters to go to the ball, and she didn’t want Clara to go. Clara was also dressed in gold in this story, and she had dainty white slippers.
What a great question! I felt a certain degree of sympathy for both sisters. Iris was a strong, intelligent, perceptive and caring character her only flaw was a superficial one, her looks. Further, she did have a difficult life and was constantly belittled for her appearance. Clara on the other hand lead a charmed life and was pampered and doted on due to her looks. However, Clara was insecure and frightened of the outside world and therefore lacked the depth of character and experience that Iris possessed. If I had to choose I felt much more sympathy for Clara who was her own worst enemy and lacked the courage to grow.
The charles perrault version was a lot more serious therefore easier to believe even though we now it’s not. He origionally wrote it like an adult version. The grimm brothers story was very much like a fairy tale so easier to believe it was fake.
Personally, I did not like the way Charles Perrault wrote his version of Cinderella. I felt his writing skills were good but too grown up for a story with fairy godmothers etc. but I also understand that the story was written for older readers rather than children.
Response to question 2: (my last response was to question 1)
I enjoyed reading the Grimm Brothers’ Cinderella, though i have never heard a version of Cinderella where the sisters cut off parts of their feet. I liked that she went to a magical tree and received various articles of clothing. I also liked that there was a three day long festival.
I think confessions of an ugly stepsister mostly related to the charles perrault version. In the perrault version there is a fairy god mother and in the story it said that clara’s dead mother acted as a fairy somehow and made her even more beautiful. The evil stepmother made the pretty stepdaughter work in the fires and clean the house in both stories. In perraults version the stepsisters were not so bad to their stepsister. In Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Iris and Ruth were not mean to clara. They actually understood her problems. In both stories the daughter is dressed in gold and is wearing white slippers. The last similarity is that the mother dies and the new stepmother takes advantage of the distraught father and takes all of his money to waste it on nothing important.
In both stories, the stepsisters feel that they are “worth” far more than Cinderella is. Also, Cinderella shows no signs of bitterness towards her cruel stepsisters. Overall, the general story line seems the same, except there is no fairy godmother in the Grimm Brothers’ version.
Definatley liked it more because of the lack of gore! It was classy but kind of confusing with the language. It kept reminding me of other plain cinderella stories that I’ve heard before.
EEEEEEWWWWWW…….I really didn’t like this one! It was gross and made me cringe. But beside the gory and disgusting it was very creative and beautifully written.
I think Charles Perrault and Gregory Maguire’s story are related more closely than Gregory Maguire’s is to the Grimm Brothers. Gregory Maguire and Charles Perrault seem to get across that the story takes place in a harsh world. I think Margarethe is a lot harsher than the mother in the Charles Perrault’s version. The only thing that really strikes me as completely different is that the stepsisters in Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister are friendlier than those in the Charles Perrault version.
If you cut out all the gore from the Grimm brothers one they would be the same old cinderella story. The parents get married the little girl turns into cinderella. Then a while later there comes time for the ball and cinderella finds her fairy godmother and runs away and gets hitched and the rest is happily ever after!
This is simple. The 2 differences are that one is gross and one is ok. Hahaha no just kidding. One is more creative, one goes more into detail in the beginning, and one is just a little bit crazy.
I think Conffesions of an Ugly Stepsister mostly goes with the Charles Perrault story because:
-It goes into detail in the beginning like in that story
-It had a fairy god mother in it and said that Clara’s mother was her’s
-Clara isn’t treated very badly in either of the stories
-Clara wore gold and white slippers in both stories too.
-Lastly, the evil stepmother made her own daughters do the work along with Clara so she is not quite as mean as we percieve.
i liked the Grim Brothers story much better. i think that it had that part of the story that makes you remember it. because of it’s twist on the normal “fairies and pumpkins” sort of tale.
one of the similarities of the two stories is that ni both, the sisters are quite evil. they are mean and crule and would do anything that they could to make her feel horrible, something you didn’t find in Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.
i actually agree with Meredith. the Grimm Brothers story seems to atract a cirtin audience while the Charles Perrault is, in a way, the opposite audience.
Q 5
i think that it most closely resembles the Grimm Brothers story because;
~ (athough this may sound strange) the wooden shoes
~the bird in the tree that gave her what she wanted, is mentioned in Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister
~the Birds were a big part of the story
~ the dress was Golden
~Both sisters tried on the shoe at thier mothers command.
I think Margarethe though that her intentions were good, but I don’t agree with them. I think Margarethe was only thinking about herself, and you can obviously see that because she killed someone in order to marry van den Meer. It seems that Margarethe was brought up in that way and did not think it was so wrong.
I was really surprised when I found out that Ruth wasn’t supid because when I have gone back and read the all the versions of the old Cinderella stories there was always a stupid one and I thought that would be Ruth….it was a big shock!
Comparing Confessions of an Ugly Stpesister with other versions of Cinderella stories you have heard….which do you think was a truer version of Cinderella’s/ Stepsister’s life. This book or another version?

I think the Confessions of an ugly stepsister resembles the Cinderella story more by Charles Perrault. This story has less violence shall i say. Like, everybody stays intact in that story, just like in the Confessions of an ugly stepsister. Also, in both, the mother dies. In most Cinderella stories the mother dies, but still. Another reason is that they sort of have like the same kind of language. The Perrault story isnt completely like the Confessions of an ugly stepsister but they are sort of alike. In both stories there were fairy godmothers. In the Confessions of an ugly stepsister, Clara said her mother was but it was still her fairy godmother. The last reason why I think they are similar is that all of the girls had to do work. Im saying, it wasnt just Clara who had to do the work.
Id have to say i would sympathize more with iris. It must be hard trying to take care of Ruth, and then having to befriend Clara. Also having to be her sister also. I just think it must be a little difficult for her.
I was very surprised when I found out that Ruth was not as stupid as she was portrayed in the actual story. Why did Van Den Meer actually marry Margarethe? i never unstood that. I understand that his wife had just died but like why did he remarry… especially Margarethe.
i think that clara has many issues,no offence. she is so cought up with herself that she can’t see the beauty of the world around her. Her arrogance made it so that she couldn’t enjoy what she had. i think that Iris is happier with her life because she is exposed to more. Iris see’s the beauty and color in everything and is more apprechiative to what she had, as apposed to clara who always had everything.
