What a great question! I felt a certain degree of sympathy for both sisters. Iris was a strong, intelligent, perceptive and caring character her only flaw was a superficial one, her looks. Further, she did have a difficult life and was constantly belittled for her appearance. Clara on the other hand lead a charmed life and was pampered and doted on due to her looks. However, Clara was insecure and frightened of the outside world and therefore lacked the depth of character and experience that Iris possessed. If I had to choose I felt much more sympathy for Clara who was her own worst enemy and lacked the courage to grow.
